Heat: The team will sign Morlon Wiley to a 10-day contract to replace Bimbo Coles, who dislocated his left index finger Monday against Boston. Coles, who has averaged 7.1 points and 3.6 assists in 57 games, will be out about two weeks. A five-year NBA veteran, Wiley most recently played with the CBA's Quad City, averaging 7.3 points and four assists.
Bulls: John Paxson, who missed the first 31 games of the season, was put back on the injured list to rest his sore left knee. The Bulls signed guard Jo Jo English to a 10-day contract to take Paxson's spot. English played 23 games earlier this season and has been playing in the CBA with the LaCrosse Catbirds.
Hornets: Commissioner David Stern turned down a protest filed by Charlotte after a 105-101 overtime loss to Cleveland Feb. 20, despite acknowledging that officials misapplied "the away-from-the-play" foul rule when Cleveland's Bobby Phills was fouled by Muggsy Bogues. The foul should have given Cleveland one free throw and possession of the ball. The Cavs also should have been allowed to select any of their players on the floor to shoot. However, officials gave Cleveland two free throws and directed Phills to shoot. He missed the first shot, then made the second to put Cleveland ahead by three. Stern said that if the rule had been applied properly, the Cavaliers would have selected their best shooter, Mark Price, "making it likely that the shot would have been made."
