Maybe I should send this to Miss Manners, but if you call somebody to thank them for a gift, do you have to write a thank-you note, too?

People like to know their gifts have been received. And most of our callers agree that a phone call of thanks is just fine. But still. Don't you love getting a letter in among the junk mail and the bills? Be generous and spend the 29 cents.
