Jelks sets quick pace, but Dixie sweeps meet

Michelle Jelks of Northeast High School, second-team Times' All-County last year, is expanding her horizon. She added the 440-yard race to her list of events.

She does not have the county's best yet, but then she is only a sophomore. Give her a little bit of time. She already has the county's best in the 100 yards (12.4 seconds), the 220 (27.3), the long jump (17 feet) and triple-jump (34 feet). She ran the 440 for the first time Tuesday, finishing with a 1:09.

However, her versatile performance wasn't enough for Northeast to take first-place in a triangular meet. Dixie Hollins, with Marjorie Schmidt, first in the mile (5:59), the 2-mile (13:18), and anchor on the mile relay, took first with 69 points, while Northeast was second with 69, and host Gibbs third with 36{.

Marjorie's twin brother, Chris, led Dixie to the boys win with three third-place finishes for 100 poinmts, while Gibbs had 45 and Northeast 39.

Schmidt was 4:43 in the mile, 2:05 in the 880, and 10:41 in 2 miles, plus the mile relay.
