State and Largo officials met this week to begin planning the possible widening of West Bay Drive between Clearwater/Largo Road and Seminole Boulevard. City officials hope the state will agree to widen the road by buying a right of way south of West Bay Drive instead of north. Since Largo already owns land on the south side, part of which is Ulmer Park, the project could be completed at a cheaper price. In the past, because of a federal requirement, park land could not be used for road widening. If the state and city agree on a plan, they will seek federal approval. Between now and November, engineers hired by the state will study the project to see if it is needed. Largo officials should know by December if the road widening is feasible.
