Sarasota Riverview put together a strong second half to top Bradenton Manatee 27-14 Friday night and virtually lock up a district title while strengthening its position in state and national football polls.
"I've never been prouder of a group of kids," said Riverview coach John Sprague. "Before the season nobody gave us a chance of winning anything. Now we're sitting in the driver's seat."
After allowing Manatee's Dock Pollard to run for touchdowns of 79 and 52 yards in the first half, the Rams came out after intermission and played their typical game of ball control.
Trailing 14-10 at intermission, Riverview then blanked Manatee, taking a 19-14 lead on James Mills' 1 yard scoring run with 9:33 in the game. He scored again from 17 yards out with some 40 seconds left in the game.
