A jury Friday convicted a 16-year-old for his part in the kidnapping of a woman and her two daughters that resulted in the rape of the mother and the slaying of her children.
Alfonza Smalls, who was 14 at the time, contended that he was coerced by an older friend, Richard Henyard, who was 18 at the time of the attack on Jan. 30, 1993, Henyard was convicted in May and sentenced to death.
Dorothy Reid Lewis and her daughters were abducted from a Winn-Dixie store in Eustis and driven to a rural road, where she was assaulted. Mrs. Lewis was shot. Her children, Jasmine, 3, and Jamilya, 7, were killed.
Smalls is expected to receive a life sentence rather than the death penalty because of his age at the time of the crime.
