DeCarlo Deveaux, who set season and career scoring records last season as a University of Tampa senior, was drafted in the sixth round (83rd overall) by the Hartford Hellcats of the Continental Basketball Association last month, not long after completing his UT course work. He has been working out at UT in preparation for the Hellcats rookie camp which begins Oct. 29. The CBA season begins Nov. 19.
"I'm anxious to get up there and prove to some of those people who passed me by that they made a mistake," said Deveaux, a 6-6 swingman who twice received SSC player of the year and All-American honors.
Deveaux's NBA prospects were dashed by a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee that required reconstructive surgery last spring. "But I'd say it's 99 percent _ I can dunk off it now and I couldn't do that last year _ so hopefully this will open up some other options to those opportunities that passed me by."
