Police search for parents of abandoned baby boy

The newborn baby found abandoned Friday outside a home in Ruskin remained in fair condition Saturday at Tampa General Hospital. Sheriff's officials have had no luck finding the baby's parents.

If the infant's mother attempts to seek medical assistance, the Hillsborough Sheriff's Office will be notified, spokeswoman Debbie Carter said.

Sheriff's officials were back in the Ruskin neighborhood Saturday looking for clues to the mother's identity.

The 7-pound, 4-ounce boy, nicknamed "Baby Friday" by deputies, was found at 2:15 p.m. Friday outside the home of Diana Martinez, 502 Sixth Ave. SE, by Martinez's sister-in-law and babysitter.

According to figures supplied by the state Department of Health and Rehabilitative Services, 165 children, newborn to age-2, were abandoned in Florida in 1992-93.

Authorities are asking for help in finding the infant's parents. Anyone with information is asked to call 247-8201.
