The city of Temple Terrace was recognized recently by the Florida League of Cities at the 1994 City Innovations Showcase during the league's 68th annual convention. Temple Terrace's Department of Finance & Administration was recognized for its initiative in sales tax savings on construction of the city's new Public Works Complex. City Finance Director Dan Klein and his staff worked with the contractor, CANCO General Contractors, to identify quantities of materials that could be purchased by the city. The city issued $420,000 in purchase orders directly to suppliers, saving more than $27,000 in sales tax. CANCO assisted by receiving all direct purchases and providing payment authorization to the finance department. The city was also able to take advantage of term discounts offered by several of the suppliers, producing an additional $2,200 in savings.
