Chronic pain widespread, study finds

Nearly one-fifth of the adult U.S. population suffers from chronic pain, ranging from migraine headaches to arthritis, according to a recently released poll.

The survey also found that about 10 percent of all pain patients are very dissatisfied with over-the-counter analgesics and that about 20 percent are dissatisfied with prescription pain relief drugs.

The survey was released at a briefing on pain conducted by the American Medical Association. The poll involved a national cross-section of 1,000 patients and 400 doctors.
