Yashin jumps to IHL
The Las Vegas Thunder signed Ottawa Senators center Alexei Yashin on Monday, making it the first time an NHL player has jumped to the International Hockey League since the lockout began. Yashin will make his debut today when the Thunder hosts the Milwaukee Admirals. As a rookie last season, Yashin led the Senators with 30 goals and 79 points. He was the NHL Rookie of the Month last November. Meanwhile, Toronto defenseman Dave Ellett was close to a deal with the CHL's Wichita Thunder.
Two Sharks arrested
Two San Jose Sharks defensemen were arrested in separate drunken driving incidents in Santa Clara County, Calif., police said. Shawn Cronin sustained minor facial lacerations in a solo accident Sunday night and Ilya Byakin was arrested early Monday after police spotted him speeding.
The players' association has booked an arena in Hamilton, Ontario, for a tournament Nov. 10-12. The tourney, expected to feature Wayne Gretzky, Doug Gilmour, Sergei Fedorov and other stars, is expected to be the first of several held by the union in non-NHL cities.
Refs to meet
NHL referees and linesmen, concerned over how much longer they will continue to be paid during the lockout, will meet with league executives today.
