A sheriff's lieutenant in an unmarked police car mistakenly was pulled over for speeding by an Inverness Police Department officer Saturday night, sheriff's officials said Monday. Lt. Tommy Merritt was on his way to a domestic disturbance in Dunnellon in an unmarked car when an officer, whom Inverness police officials declined to identify Monday, began chasing him. After the Inverness patrol car began pursuing Merritt near the Inverness Regional Shopping Center, Merritt tried to radio dispatch workers to contact the other officer to call off the chase, said Gail Tierney, Sheriff's Office spokeswoman. Dispatch officials were unable to reach the officer, so Merritt pulled his vehicle off the road. The Inverness police officer then recognized Merritt and allowed him to continue.
