They're close to half-ton

They can grow 30 pounds in a day. They grow so fast they sometimes explode. They are so heavy you need a forklift to move them.

Great Pumpkins do exist.

A loose-knit group of hobbyists concentrated in North America, Great Britain and Australia has gotten serious about growing huge pumpkins.

This year, the 900-pound mark was broken. A half-ton pumpkin is looming.

What's the secret to growing a giant pumpkin? Breeding.

"Big pumpkins have to come from stud seeds," said Terry Pimsleur, president of the International Pumpkin Association.

But there's a catch. The pumpkins are so tasteless they're not good to eat.

The reigning world champion _ 990 pounds _ was grown this year by a Canadian man.
