Cat's Meow tops men's softball

Cat's Meow Florist rode the bats of Mike Downing and Jeff Webb to a 17-1 victory over Wheeler Homes Monday night in a game that decided the season title in the Inverness Parks and Recreation Division men's fall softball league.

Downing's 3-for-3 performance included a double and five RBI. Webb had two hits, one a homer, and four RBI to help Cat's Meow (11-1).

Subway/Hayes Health Foods (10-2) finished second in the league by virtue of a 15-4 win over Willi's Place/Zarro's, and Whoo dumped Bob's Aluminum 16-3 in one other game on the final night.

Bill Grady, Randy Scott and Brian Hayes all went 3-for-3 for Subway. Grady had a double, sacrifice fly and two RBI. Scott added a double and three RBI, and Hayes had one RBI.

Inverness women: The number of games played each week will increase for the Inverness Parks and Recreation Division women's fall softball league now that the men's league has completed its season. Henceforth, women's games at Whispering Pines Park will be played Tuesday, Thursday and Friday nights through Nov. 9, when a round of make-up games finishes off the season. In addition, two games will be played Halloween night at 7:45 and 9.

Black Diamond (9-0) kept its record perfect Tuesday night with a 20-0 whitewashing of A-Able Septic (2-5). Little Caesar's (3-5) posted a 17-4 victory over Ball Busters (0-8), and Southern Sun (4-3) had an easy time in its 17-6 whipping of ENH Express (1-7).

County men: Southern Timber (11-1) has opened a 1{-game lead over Nature Coast (10-3) in the Citrus County Parks and Recreation Division men's fall softball league heading into action tonight. Here are highlights of games from the past week.

Tuesday: Doug Smith went 3-for-3 with a double and five RBI as Nature Coast pounded out a 16-1 win over Sportsters/Gator Auto Transport (5-9).

Pro-Line Boats scored all its runs in the first two innings on the way to an 8-4 win over Black Diamond. Tim Redick tripled home three runs in the first and Steve Lopez knocked in one with a triple in the second for Pro-Line. Black Diamond's Phil Perry doubled twice, singled and drove in two runs.

Charles Pope drilled a three-run homer in the first inning when Skidmore's Sports Supply (9-3) tallied 12 times on the way to a 19-4 pasting of Gulf Coast Ford (0-12). Pope added a single, double and scored three runs. Pinch-hitter Matt Duke slammed a three-run homer for the victors in the fourth.

Monday: Rex Adair went 2-for-2 with a sacrifice fly and four RBI to power Southern Timber to an 11-7 win over First Baptist Church of Crystal River (4-8). Baptist's Terry Lanier doubled, singled twice and drove in three runs.

A grand slam off the bat of Joe Winkler and a two-run homer from Joe Bermudez were part of an eight-run third inning that carried Sportsters/Gator Auto Transport to a 15-4 victory over Pro-Line Boats.

George McKinney went 3-for-4 with a two-run homer, triple, single, three runs and four RBI as Nature Coast bombed Kirk Realty 16-7. Phil Savage contributed a three-run pinch-hit homer in the fifth. Kidge Colbert of Kirk Realty had a two-run homer, double, single and three RBI.

Thursday: Bill Langley was 3-for-3 with a single, double, triple, two runs and three RBI as Kirk Realty beat Gulf Coast Ford 8-1.

In other games, Skidmore's beat First Baptist Church 3-1 and Black Diamond topped Nature Coast 5-4.

Games are played Monday, Tuesday and Thursday nights at Bicentennial Park in Crystal River.

County women: Citrus-95 may be the champion of the Citrus County Parks and Recreation Division women's fall softball league today. Results of games played Wednesday night weren't available, but Citrus-95 (5-2) was in a position to clinch the title with a win over Crystal River Bank (4-3). However, if Bank won, the season will go down to a final night of games Nov. 2 at Bicentennial Park.

In games played Oct. 19, Citrus-95 downed Anderson Roofing 6-5 and BMWs stunned Crystal River Bank 12-10 to break a deadlock for first place.

Stacey Cerveny drove in two runs, one on a fifth-inning double, for Citrus-95. Teammate Gwen Martone had a single, sacrifice fly and one RBI. Marilyn Rowe went 3-for-4 with two RBI for Anderson Roofing (3-4).

BMWs (2-5) jumped to a 8-0 lead in its game behind a single, double, triple and three RBI from Nancy Kinard, who wound up 3-for-4. Joan Mann scored all four times she batted, reaching base on three singles and a walk. She also knocked in a run for BMWs.

Bank was led by Ellen Priest and Heidi Law. Priest stroked a two-run triple in the third inning and Law doubled and scored too.

55-and-over softball: Lassiter Ware (4-0) continues to set the pace in the 55-and-over league at Bicentennial Park, where games are played Mondays at 1 p.m. and 2:15 p.m.

Chuck Osborn singled twice, scored twice and drove in four runs, and Jack Gobin contributed a double and three RBI Monday as Lassiter Ware drubbed Summit Pools 14-4. Winning pitcher Al Stabke went 3-for-3 with three runs scored. The victory was the 15th straight over two seasons for Lassiter Ware.

Citrus Olds (3-1) stayed in the title chase by beating Brannen Bank 7-1 in an earlier game. Winning pitcher Ray Greenwald allowed just seven hits while going 2-for-2 at the plate. John Chiasson had two hits, two RBI and two runs, and Bob Jackson had one hit and two RBI for Citrus Olds. Brannen Bank's Art Jaehing had two hits and a RBI.

Volleyball league opens: The Citrus County Parks and Recreation Division's Power Volleyball League began play last Friday night with two matches. IDM defeated Arm & Hammer 15-8, 15-13 and Florida Power downed Spike Force 15-11, 15-4.

Both men and women compete in the four-team league. Matches are played each Friday beginning at 7 p.m. at Crystal River Middle School, and spectators are welcome. The season runs through Feb. 3.
