Senate candidate Michael Huffington, who has made opposition to illegal immigration a major campaign theme in California, has acknowledged he employed an illegal immigrant.
The Huffington campaign issued a statement late Wednesday to the Los Angeles Times acknowledging that the Republican congressman employed an illegal alien as a nanny.
The woman worked for the Huffingtons for five years and stopped last year, shortly after Huffington was sworn into office and several months before he announced his challenge to Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein, the Times reported Thursday.
Employing illegal aliens is a violation of federal law.
Huffington supports Proposition 187, a ballot measure that would deny illegal immigrants public schooling and most health and welfare benefits.
Attorney General Janet Reno denounced the measure Thursday and said the Justice Department would review it. Story, 4A
