Wing Petr Klima signed a contract and will play for Wurtzburg of the elite league in Germany, his agent, Paul Kraus, said Friday.
Klima is the first Lightning regular to find hockey employment in another league during the lockout.
How much will Klima make? "Not as much as he would over here," said Kraus, who declined to comment further on Klima's salary.
Klima was scheduled to make $750,000 this season with the Lightning.
Kraus did say the German team would pay for Klima's comprehensive insurance.
Klima, born in Chomutov, Czechoslovakia, had no previous ties with Wurtzburg. He is the first NHL player on its roster.
"Petr just wants to be playing," Kraus said. "He hasn't been playing for a long time."
Klima did not participate in training camp games because of a knee injury, which has healed.
Defenseman Roman Hamrlik could become the next regular to sign with a league overseas. Hamrlik said he received a call Wednesday from his former manager of ZPS Zlin of the elite league in the Czech Republic.
"He asked me if I could come back and help on defense," Hamrlik said Friday. "I said, "Yeah, I think about it.' "
