Pats win behind Beatty

Senior captain Kristi Beatty served up a third consecutive Class 5A, District 8 title Friday for Pinellas Park as it whipped Largo 15-8, 15-2.

Beatty led the Patriots (22-5) to a 10-1 lead in the first game as her devastating jump serves rained on the Packers' helpless back line. Largo (14-10) finally adjusted and got the ball to its tall middle hitter, Liz Garland. With three straight service points by Kelly Crockett and two kills and a block by Garland, the Packers pulled within 12-8. Then the Pats' defense tightened and Beth Young served out the game 15-8.

In the second game, Beatty was everywhere. She dug from the back line, made perfect sets to outside hitters Tracy Schroeder and Trisha Beatty, and even a had few kills of her own. And once again, her service was unstoppable.

Beatty served Pinellas Park to an 8-0 lead, capped by 5 feet 5 Melani Lasch's kill past the Largo front line. Garland and Crockett made some good plays at the net to bring Largo within 9-2, but then it was time for Beatty to serve again. She stymied the Largo defense with six straight service points, including three aces.

The Patriots will host 5A-9 winner Tarpon Springs Tuesday for the Region IV championship. Largo coach Michael Carli said he thinks the Pats will continue to do well in post-season play.

"If they play like they did tonight, they'll go far," Carli said. "I think our girls were a little intimidated tonight. It's tough to beat a Hollie Miller-coached team."
