Griffin ineligible

Mississippi freshman cornerback Malikia Griffin has been declared ineligible for the rest of the season. The change was prompted by the cancellation of a test score. NCAA rules allow non-qualifiers to be eligible after one year in residence at a member institution. Southeastern Conference rules, however, require that a non-qualifier graduate from a two-year junior college before being eligible.


Penn rolling: Unbeaten Penn beat Yale 14-6, extending its Division I-AA winning streak to 18 games. Penn (6-0) has not lost since Nov. 14, 1992.

Stymied: Wyoming's Ryan Christopherson, the nation's 10th-ranked rusher, was held to 27 yards on 11 carries in a 34-17 loss to Air Force.

Aggies stopped: Texas A&M's 21-21 tie with SMU ended the Aggies' 26-game win streak in the Southwest Conference.


Air update: Steve McNair broke the Division I-AA career passing yardage record, leading Alcorn State back from a 35-13 deficit to tie Samford 45-45. McNair completed 37 of 63 passes for 563 yards and four touchdowns. He broke the passing record in the third quarter to bring his career total to 13,487. The previous record of 13,220 was held by Neil Lomax of Portland State from 1977-80.

Top Spider: In a 29-6 loss to James Madison, host Richmond (3-6, 1-5) got 112 yards on 20 carries from Uly Scott, who became the school's career rushing leader with 3,430 yards over four seasons, eclipsing Barry Redden's record of 3,324 yards in 1968-71.

Century mark: In a 61-14 loss to Lafayette, Bucknell tailback Rich Lemon rushed for 111 yards on 22 carries to break a school record for 100-yard games in a career with 14.


In its loss to Wisconsin, Michigan played without tailback Tshimanga Biakabutuka, out with a bruised right knee.
