Hurricanes lead way on record-setting day

Led by a girls squad that captured six individual events, and a boys team that took followed suit, Citrus High swept the Gulf Coast Conference swim meet at the Hernando County YMCA.

Along the way, the Citrus girls set four conference records and out-distanced the pack by 123 points. The Hurricanes finished the competition with 435 points, easily besting second-place Lecanto at 322. Crystal River was a close third at 318, followed by Hernando (219) and host Central (180).

The Citrus boys' victory was closer but just as complete. Citrus had just one individual winner, but placed several other swimmers to finish with 399 points. Crystal River was second with 371, followed by Lecanto at 340, Central at 213 and Hernando with 151.

Amber McLain paced the Citrus performance, capturing the 200-yard freestyle title in record-setting fashion with a 2 minutes, 4.54 seconds. McLain also won the 500-yard freestyle race with a 5:28.25 mark, also a conference record. If that wasn't enough, McLain also anchored the 400-yard freestyle relay team that won its event with a record-setting 4:20.82 time.

Other winners for the Hurricane girls were Ambria Davidson (200-yard individual medley); Laura Higdon (100-yard butterfly, 100-yard breaststroke); Stacey Wheeler (100-yard freestyle). Higdon, Wheeler, McLain and Janet Breese teamed up for the relay victories.

Meanwhile, Jimbo St. Clair was the lone first-place finisher for Citrus, winning the boys 200-yard freestyle with a 2:06.50 time. But with strong swimming from Keith Foster, Mike Herndon and Matt Mitchell and solid diving from Josh Storms and Chris Meahl, the Hurricanes had plenty of points.

They would prove to be needed in the competition that had 10 conference records set, tight races in the boys competition and a fight for second place in the overall girls events.

Other standout performances were turned in by Lecanto's Matt Hampton and Mike Antonucci, Central's Justin Nolan and Crystal River's John Holme.

Hampton set two conference marks with a 2:09.17 time in the 200-yard individual medley and a :58.05 time in the 100-yard butterfly. Nolan won the boys 100-yard freestyle with a :52.73 mark, also a conference record while Holme paced Crystal River's second-place finish with a record-setting time of 5:46.36 in the 500-yard freestyle.
