Lions Club looking for fun-loving helpers

Robert "Bob" Knowles, a member of the Lutz-Land O'Lakes Lions Club, better known as the 4 L's, invites men and women to assist them in their quest to help the less fortunate. For people unfamiliar with the Lions Club work, Knowles offers the following information:

The major program of the association is to help visually impaired people. He reports that the Lions have been doing that for more than 70 years.

The 4 L's support the Lions Eye Banks including one located in Tampa. The eye banks supply corneas for corneal transplants.

The Lions Camp offers blind children a chance to have fun for a couple of weeks in a camp-like atmosphere. And the Conklin Center in Daytona Beach trains multi-handicapped blind people so that they can become self-sufficient in their community.

The club also supports guide dog schools including one located in Palmetto. In addition, the club also supports the Florida Foundation for the Blind and Lions Clubs International Foundation.

The Florida Foundation assists Lions Clubs in paying for eye operations for people who cannot afford them and they also assist monetarily when disasters occur throughout the world.

He says the Lions also have branched into other areas such as drug awareness, hearing and speech, diabetes awareness and hearing dogs.

People interested in helping the Lions complete their projects are invited to attend the meetings at 7 p.m. on the second Monday of each month at the clubhouse on U.S. 41 in Lutz, next to the old Lutz schoolhouse.

For more information, call Knowles at (904) 683-9204; Helen Cornaglia at (813) 949-5992; or Nancy Henry at (813) 996-6832.

Knowles adds that the club raises money, but has fun doing it.
