A 19-year-old man has been arrested for his role in the early morning attack of a St. Petersburg woman who was shot twice and sexually assaulted in June 1993.
Gerald Kendall Wright, 3920 Ninth Ave. S, was held Saturday at the Pinellas County Jail. His arrest late Friday came three weeks after another man was charged in the same attack.
Michael L. Morgan, 20, was accused of holding a handgun against the woman as Wright performed a sexual act on her June 10, 1993, and threatened to do more harm to her.
Morgan, of 2551 DeSoto Way S, also is accused of shooting the 30-year-old woman as she tried to escape.
Here is what police say happened:
The woman fell asleep on a couch on her front porch sometime in the early evening. About 12:30 a.m., she went inside the house, near Jordan Park, to use the bathroom.
She found two men inside who had ripped out a screen and opened an unlocked window; one of them was holding a revolver. Once she entered the living room, the men told her to sit down and take off her clothes.
One man pointed the gun at her and told her he would shoot her. He then asked her for condoms. She told him where to find the condoms and the other man retrieved them.
When the second man came back into the room, the first man turned to the second man and the woman raced for a door. She told police she thinks the key broke in a lock on the door. She turned to a window and began breaking glass to get out of the house.
That's when the man opened fire. He shot twice. The third time he pulled the trigger, the gun misfired. Both shots hit her, wounding her in the left thigh, right buttocks and left forearm.
The woman ran to neighbors, who gave her a towel and called police. Both men ransacked her house and stole jewelry.
The woman was able to identify both men from their photographs, police said. Morgan was arrested in early October.
Morgan was charged with attempted first-degree murder, armed sexual battery, armed burglary assault and aggravated battery with a firearm. At the time of his arrest, records show, Morgan had been free on bail for an armed robbery charge and serving probation for attempted second-degree murder. He is being held without bail.
Wright was arrested Friday and charged with armed sexual battery, armed burglary assault, violating his probation and driving without a valid license. Wright, who was held on $76,426 bail, also was charged with possessing marijuana when police arrested him.
