With only a minor mishap, Lecanto's boys roll on

Members of the Lecanto boys cross country team knew that, barring a calamity, they would win the Class 4A, District 3 meet Saturday at Whispering Pines Park without much fuss.

But calamity nearly struck.

Sean McManus, the top runner all season for the No. 1 state-ranked Panthers, was leading at the mile mark when he stepped in a hole on the rugged course, twisted his ankle and tumbled to the ground.

Teammate Keith Gordon, running fourth in the lead pack, called to McManus not to get up if he would do further damage by completing the race. But 10 seconds later, McManus was back in the lead.

"Sean is such an incredible runner, he could run fast if he had no ankles," said Gordon, who traded the lead twice more with McManus before outsprinting him to the finish. It was Gordon's first victory of the season in a personal best time of 15 minutes, 18 seconds.

And that was the sum total of the excitement.

Lecanto, unbeaten this season and rated 21st in the nation by The Harrier magazine, advanced to next week's Region II meet with the minimum of 15 points. McManus held on for second (15:21), Jeremy Edge was third (15:34), Adam Spate fourth (15:39), Gary Plutta fifth (15:40) and Derek Ellis sixth (15:49). Travis Tatman was 10th (16:36).

All but McManus and Edge ran season-best times.

"Going into state we need all the confidence we can get," Lecanto coach Tim Byrne said. "And they're even running well without being challenged. Hopefully, they can keep it up all the way through the state meet."

The top six teams and top four individual runners among the 13-team field advanced from both the boys and girls races, including Lecanto's second-place girls team, and the boys and girls teams from Citrus, both with third-place efforts.

Senior Emilie Ruetenik led the Panthers in the 2-mile girls race with a second-place finish in 12:26, only two seconds behind district front-runner Annice Williams of Starke Bradford. Lecanto's Cindy Ketchum was fourth (12:45) and Amy Beams seventh (13:16).

Also in the Top 20 were Citrus senior Elisa Ginabreda (ninth, 13:33) and Kari Cassidy (17th, 14:08).

For the boys, Citrus was led by senior Christian Feldt (11th, 16:39). Crystal River's Brian Holmes was 17th (17:25), but no one from the Pirates boys or girls teams advanced.

The top four teams and top four individuals at the Region II meet next Saturday at McKethan Lake north of Brooksville advance to the Class 4A state meet Nov. 12 in Jacksonville.
