Woman awakes to find man, police say

A St. Petersburg woman awoke early Thursday to find a half-naked man in bed with her, police say. Mahmoud I. Abdellatef, of 5220 Fourth Ave. N, was charged with attempted sexual battery. Abdellatef, 44, was held on $25,000 bail Saturday at the Pinellas County Jail. The woman told police she awoke about 3 a.m. Thursday after she felt a body rubbing against her. She also was fondled, police say. When she ordered the assailant to leave, police say, the man got out of bed and put on his pants. She told police she feared she would have been sexually assaulted had she not awakened.

Man hit by car, is in critical condition

ST. PETERSBURG _ A man remained hospitalized Saturday after he was struck by a car as he crossed 34th Street N. Richard J. Paulino, 43, was walking east across the 400 block of 34th Street when he was hit, St. Petersburg police said. The car was driven by Vanessa D. Tonelli, 23, of St. Pete Beach, police said. Neither she nor her passenger, David G. Shepard, 27, of Pinellas Park, was injured. Paulino, whose address was not available, was taken to Bayfront Medical Center, where he was in critical condition Saturday. Other details of the accident were not released by police.
