Jimmy Johnson averaged 256 over his first six games of qualifying, including a 299 game, and has the early lead in the Professional Bowlers Association's Great Lakes Classic in Grand Rapids, Mich. Johnson totaled 1,539 pins in round one and took a 60-pin lead into round two. Eugene McCune was second, four pins ahead of Walter Ray Williams.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Virginia, which lost to eventual national champion North Carolina in the Atlantic Coast Conference women's basketball tournament championship last March, was picked in a preseason poll to win the 1994-95 title. Florida State was picked to finish last in the conference. Virginia's Wendy Palmer, an all-ACC selection last year, was selected as the preseason player of the year, capturing 24 votes. Tracy Reid of North Carolina was chosen to be the ACC's rookie of the year.

ET CETERA: Three more yachts in the BOC Challenge reached Cape Town, South Africa, completing the first leg of the around-the-world solo race. Twenty yachts began the race out of Charleston on Sept. 17. Yugoslavia lost out to Greece as host nation for the 1998 men's basketball World Championship, the international basketball organizing body announced.
