U.S. show of force

American warplanes flying from the United States will bomb the Kuwaiti desert on Tuesday to show Iraq the global reach of U.S. power, the U.S. Embassy said Sunday.

Long-range B-1 and B-52 heavy bombers will be part of air exercises by more than 100 U.S. warplanes over Kuwait and the no-fly zone in southern Iraq, an embassy statement said.

Iraq massed about 60,000 troops close to the Kuwaiti border earlier this month in an apparent bid to end economic sanctions imposed after its 1990 invasion.

The United States, Britain and gulf Arab allies rushed forces to the region, prompting an Iraqi withdrawal.
