The taste of ants

Published Jun. 15, 1995|Updated Oct. 4, 2005

Capt. Scott F. O'Grady said he survived by eating grass and ants after being shot down in Bosnia. What do ants taste like?

University of Colorado at Boulder anthropologist Darna Durfour, a specialist in insect cuisine who has snacked on everything from mealworms to crickets, says ants are tastiest when toasted. In a recent magazine article, she recalled her first taste of toasted ants at a U.S. Embassy Party in Bogota, Colombia. "They tasted sort of meatish," said Durfour.
