Paul Coffey led defensemen with 58 points and had league highs with 27 power-play assists and 31 points during the season, but he has only an assist on Detroit's lone goal of Game 1 _ the 119th playoff assist of his career, moving him within one of Jari Kurri for third place on the NHL list _ and was on the ice for three New Jersey goals in Game 2.
The casual observer might look at the Devils' 2-1, 4-2 and 5-2 triumphs and point to breaks, bounces and lucky goals. But they have been great in close games throughout the post-season:
7-3 in one-goal games (not counting empty-netters).
6-2 in games decided in the third period or overtime.
7-4 when they score three goals or fewer (not counting empty-netters).
