About 5,000 National Baptist youths took to the downtown streets, their biblical chants and drumbeat steps replacing the sounds of rush-hour traffic. The March for Jesus parade, part of the National Baptist Sunday Church School and Baptist Training Union Congress last week, included about 50 uniformed drill team units from churches across the country. Youths ranging in age from 4 to 20 participated in drill teams at local churches to learn and recite passages from the Bible. "The drill teams provide a positive opportunity where young people can be themselves, be energetic and learn the word of God without being in gangs," said the Rev. Kenneth Dupree, director of publications at the National Baptist Publishing Board in Nashville.

Opposition to religious parties

MEXICO CITY _ Mexico's interior minister says he will oppose establishment of political parties with religious overtones. The minister, Esteban Moctezuma, made his remarks in a meeting with representatives of 26 evangelical churches, the El Universal newspaper said. The church representatives asked him to promote constitutional changes to guarantee equal treatment of all churches in Mexico. Moctezuma said Mexico insists on separation of church and state.
