A St. Petersburg Area Chamber of Commerce Monthly Beautification Award certificate was given last week to senior citizen volunteer gardeners who live at Palmway Village Apartments, next to Gateway Mall. Diamond-shaped flower beds and landscaping add beauty for all residents while providing therapy for the several volunteers, including, from left, Mary Elizabeth and Woodrow Neves; Macil Smith, who gardens with the help of a walker; and Joseph Hargadon. Volunteer Grace Degetter is not pictured. Mr. and Mrs. Neves have gardened here creatively and economically for more than three years. They divide and transplant perennials such as pentas, snowbush, artillery fern and oyster plants. They prune, weed, rake pine needles for mulch, fertilize and water. They don't spray pesticides because they want to encourage butterflies. Other members of the landscaping team prefer the seasonal work and beauty of annual flowers, along with shrubs.
