St. Petersburg Catholic assistant football coach Dan Mancuso has been named head coach, replacing Todd St. Louis, Principal John Carlucci said Friday.
Mancuso, 41, has been both an offensive and defensive coordinator for the Barons during the past five years. He was named coach Thursday afternoon, two weeks after the surprise resignation of St. Louis.
Carlucci said though the search for a new coach was swift, Mancuso had to beat out several candidates for the job.
"He has a lot to offer, and a lot of experience," Carlucci said. "The students respect him. . . . He cares for them and he really understands what the students are all about."
St. Louis, who coached the Barons four seasons, left to become assistant head coach at Indian Rocks Christian under Phil Farver, citing family reasons. St. Louis has two young children, and he said Indian Rocks Christian had a better benefits and education package for him and his family than any other school he considered.
"I was surprised, I really was," Carlucci said of St. Louis' resignation. "(But) the way he explained it . . . I can really understand and sympathize."
Mancuso, a non-teaching coach, is a partner in a filter recycling business in Largo. Chris Wiand, one of Mancuso's fellow assistants, will become assistant head coach.
