The NBA has chosen not to present today's expansion draft as a real news event, with independent witnesses to provide verification and wide, immediate coverage.
Instead, the exclusive rights to news from the draft have been peddled to NBC and Canadian Television.
Most observers assumed there would be immediate news from the 1 p.m. draft that will stock the Toronto Raptors and Vancouver Grizzlies with players.
NBC and CTV decided against live coverage, choosing to package the draft into a half-hour show that begins at 4:30 p.m. So the league put an embargo on the information because it was scared it might leak out and that an angry NBC or CTV might not shell out their full rights fees.
