Three people were killed, and three injured when two cars collided in southern Hillsborough County early Saturday.
The accident occurred on U.S. 301, 1.7 miles south of County Road 674 and Sun City Center.
The Sheriff's Office received the call at 3:35 a.m., according to spokesman Jack Espinosa, who gave this account:
A 1985 Mustang was headed south on U.S. 301, followed by a Mercury Sable carrying five people.
The cars were moving "pretty fast" when the Mustang slowed to make a left turn onto Bishop Road, Espinosa said.
The Sable couldn't stop and crashed into the left side of the Mustang, killing its driver. Both cars burst into flames.
The front-seat passenger and the left rear-seat passenger in the Sable were killed. The other two passengers were reported in critical condition Saturday at Tampa General Hospital, Espinosa reported.
The driver of the Sable was treated at South Bay Hospital and may be charged with improper passing or speeding, Espinosa said.
The names of the dead and injured had not been released late Saturday.
The blackened roadway where the accident and subsequent fire occurred still showed pieces of burnt wreckage and charred steel radial bands from melted tires Saturday morning.
