Authorities say woman stole $40,000 at work

Hernando County authorities have arrested a 36-year-old Pasco County woman on charges alleging that she stole $40,000 from her employer over a two-year span.

Debbie Linville, of 2244 Darby Road in central Pasco, is accused of taking the money from the Holiday Inn at State Road 50 and Interstate 75, east of Brooksville.

Hernando County sheriff's officials arrested Linville on grand theft charges Friday. She has been released from Hernando County Jail on $2,000 bail.

Linville, who worked as personnel manager at the Holiday Inn and also handled accounts receivable, is accused of gradually skimming the money from credit card payments sent to the hotel.

Authorities said Linville confessed to the motel's general manager. According to a sheriff's report, Linville approached the manager in tears and told him that she had taken the money.

Details remain murky about how Linville allegedly took the money. The sheriff's report indicates that she made deposits that were smaller than the amount the hotel received. She is accused of covering her tracks by listing lesser amounts on computerized deposit records.

Linville was arrested after turning herself in to authorities. Reached at home Monday, she referred a reporter's phone call to her attorney, who declined to comment. Holiday Inn officials also would not comment.
