Hearing set today on Baker Act

Florida lawmakers will hold a public hearing today at Pinellas Park City Hall on the Baker Act, the state's involuntary commitment law. Rep. Mary Brennan, a Pinellas Park Democrat, has called for the hearing to investigate whether psychiatric hospitals have filled beds by recruiting confused old people from nursing and retirement homes. A five-part Times series, called A Dangerous Age, disclosed that mental hospitals have collected millions of dollars in Medicare reimbursements by committing elderly men and women. The hearing will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at City Hall, 5141 78th Ave. N. The public is invited to speak at the hearing.
