Ken Simms and Michele Santos, Class 6A state champions from Leto High, will represent Hillsborough County as members of Team Florida in the U.S. Junior Nationals Wrestling Championships July 21-28 in Fargo, N.D.
Simms ended the season 30-0, winning the 140-pound belt. Santos won the 103-pound title and was 31-1.
The two local champions will face some of the best high school and college wrestlers in the country, with an estimated 115 in each weight class.
"I hope to remain undefeated, but these guys are the best in the country," Simms said. "I can't think of the last juniors champ from Hillsborough County; maybe there haven't been any. There have been a lot of national cadet champions though."
Before the tournament, Simms and Santos and many of the other contestants will participate in a week of intense training.
Both have been training so much they have not been able to raise all of the $825 each needs to make the trip. Anyone interested in helping them can contact Leto coach David Mitchell at 968-7257.
