A single-engine plane carrying five people slammed into a scrub oak tree a quarter-mile after takeoff from Pilot Country Estates on Monday morning.
The impact sheared off the Piper Cherokee's wings and, fortunately, the fuel tanks. The fuselage crashed into the ground but didn't explode.
All five people _ a family of four and a friend _ survived. They had been on their way to their Bahamas vacation home.
