Team of 70-and-over players bound for major softball tournaments

The Home Depot Floridians are anything but stay-at-homes. The team of 70-and-over softball players has qualified for the Senior World Championships in Kansas City, Mo., Sept. 12-16, and for the Senior Softball World Series in Palm Springs, Calif., Sept. 29-Oct. 3.

The team qualified in a recent tournament in which the players batted a combined .507. John Thompson, founder of the team, led the way with a .778 average. Home Depot pays for uniforms and at least 12 tournament entry fees. Players pay their own expenses when away.

The roster includes Jim Martin, Joe Marks, Bill Nagy, John Quaid and Thompson from the St. Petersburg Half-Century Club; Manny Costa and Bob Dredger from Clearwater 3 Score; Steve Benanti and Ernie Plante of New Port Richey; Bill Small of Brooksville; Jerry Giaratano, Bob Pasley and Spanky Thompson of Sun City Center; Mike Garry and Lee Smith of Nokomis; Marshall Peters of Venice; Fred Williams of Cape Coral; Shannon Steinmetz of Winter Haven; Ernie Sweigert of Haines City, and Eddie Menchinger of Sarasota.

The Masters Eastern Regional Track Championships will be held Friday and next Saturday at Broward County's Brian Piccolo Park Velodrome in Cooper City. U.S. Cycling Federation racers from Florida who are expected to dominate are Earl Henry (CDD/Pimco/Fast Track) of Pinellas Park, Scott Crowell (Team Bradenton/Sarasota/Ringling) of Treasure Island, Sharon Penn-Lichty (Kidspeed Cycling Club) of Tampa; and national track champions Carl Westergren of Palm Bay, Lynn Joslin of Vero Beach and Beth Mundy of Miami.
