After 27 years of coaching basketball in Hillsborough County, Brandon coach Frank Vining has resigned from the sport.
During his career, he coached three years at East Bay, nine years at Hillsborough and finished at Brandon, taking four teams (two from Brandon and one from each of the other two schools) to the state final four.
Last season, Vining won his 500th high school basketball game by defeating King toward the end of the season, then added four more wins for a lifetime record of 504-194.
"I'm just tired and want to spend some more time with my family," Vining said. "During the season, basketball keeps me busy every day but Sunday. This year when basketball season starts in early November, so will hunting season and I'll be hunting.
"I'll miss the kids though. Watching them improve in basketball has always been important and exciting to me."
Vining, a 28-year resident of Brandon, was selected as the Sports Achiever of the Year by the Greater Brandon Chamber of Commerce this year.
He plans to continue coaching the Eagles volleyball team and teaching driver's education until retirement.
