East meets West

Pope John Paul II welcomes Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, the spiritual leader of the world's 150-million Orthodox Christians, to the Vatican on Tuesday. It was only the seventh time since Christendom split into Roman Catholic and Orthodox branches in 1054 that the leaders of the two churches have met. The two are trying to pull the faiths closer, but obstacles remain, especially over the power of the papacy.
