Carli Dofka leads Sharks in swim meet

Carli Dofka finished first in two events to pace the Hernando County YMCA Tiger Sharks Swim Team in a recent meet at the Bobby Hicks Pool in Tampa.

Competing in the 10-and-under girls division, Dofka won the 50- and 100-meter breaststroke events while adding third-place finishes in the 200 freestyle, 200 individual medley, and 50 backstroke. She also finished fourth in the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke, and fifth in the 50 freestyle.

Also placing in the top five were Mandy Loomis, fourth in the age 11-12 girls 100 breaststroke; Yessenia Velez, fourth in the senior girls 50 freestyle; Nathaniel Brault, fifth in the 200 freestyle and the 100 butterfly among 11-12 boys, and R.J. Dofka, fourth in the 100 backstroke for 13-14 boys.

Little League baseball: The roster for the West Hernando/Shady Hills 9-10-year-old All-star team has been completed. Members include Adam Bornstein, Randy Cseh, Josh Hamilton, Kenny Zarrillo, Garret Kaleel, Bob Batista, Kevin Brennan, Michael Lucas, Thomas Raulerson, Bryon Reynolds, Brian Fleury, Arlie Hoskins, Wade Poole and Gregory Franca.

The team, which opens play July 10 at 7 p.m. against the Crystal River National squad, is managed by Randy Cseh and coached by Kenny Zarrillo.

Youth golf clinic: The Hernando County Recreation Division will offer a golf clinic for youths 6-17 on Saturday at the County Line Golf Range in Spring Hill. Rain last Saturday forced cancellation of the original date.

Children ages 6-7 will meet from 8:30 to 9 a.m. at a cost of $3 per person. Youths 8-12 will meet from 9:30 to 10:15 a.m., and those 13-17 will meet from 10:30 to 11:15. The cost for those sessions is $5.

Soccer registration: The Hernando County Recreation Division's Intermediate and Advanced Level Soccer Clinic is taking applications for a proposed week-long program. Exact dates and times are yet to be determined.

The clinic, available to 8-14-year-olds, will concentrate on ball control, passing and goalkeeping. The cost is $50, which includes insurance.

Spring Hill soccer: The Spring Hill Classic Soccer Club is accepting applications for a July 17-21 clinic that will run from 9 a.m. to noon at Delta Woods Park. Basketball school: Bill Brooks, who has guided several of his teams to state high school basketball championships, will hold his fourth annual basketball school July 17-21 at the new Spring Hill Baptist Church Gym.

Open to boys and girls in the fifth through 12th grades, it will run from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. throughout the week and will stress all the fundamentals. Among highlights will be skill contests, league play on a daily basis, and all-star games on the final day.

All who take part will receive a T-Shirt and a trophy.
