DUI checkpoint planned on 56th Street tonight

Drivers along 56th Street tonight face the prospect of being stopped at a sobriety checkpoint set up by the Florida Highway Patrol and the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office. As part of enforcement activities designed to decrease drunken driving on the Independence Day weekend, authorities will be stopping drivers along the road between 9 p.m. and 3 a.m.

12 years on drug charge

FORT PIERCE _ A retired police chief from Indiana was sentenced Thursday to 12{ years in prison for smuggling 31 kilograms of cocaine into Florida. Frederick Bernard Clark, 62, who was police chief of Delphi, Ind., was convicted by a federal jury March 21 on cocaine trafficking charges. According to police, Clark and John Lee made a trip to the Bahamas in December 1992 and brought back 31 kilograms of cocaine to Stuart.
