"Dynamite' identified as flares

(ran LA edition)

Residents in a two-block area of Largo were evacuated briefly Thursday after a man reported about 10:30 a.m. that he had some old dynamite in his car trunk.

Franklin E. Brown, 42, of Clearwater, told police that he had found a metal canister containing what looked like five sticks of dynamite in his parents' garage the night before.

He drove to work in Largo on Tuesday, parked his car on Ninth Street NW near Sixth Avenue and called police.

Tampa Bomb Squad officers inspected the container's contents and found road flares, which were dated 1972 and not explosive.
