Quilts to ceramics, veggies on the side

QUILTS IN DUNEDIN _ 18 award-winning quilts from around the world go on display at a reception 6-8 tonight at the Dunedin Fine Art Center. Also opening is "Coming Full Circle," 22 quilts by members of the Quilter's Crossing, Palm Harbor. Both shows run through Aug. 13 during regular gallery hours 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday and 1-4 p.m. Sunday. Free. The Dunedin Fine Art Center is at 1143 Michigan Blvd., Dunedin; 738-1892.

ALAN KEITH HAILEY _ Ceramist Alan Keith Hailey is memorialized in a collection of his work, opening with a reception 6-9 tonight at Artists Unlimited. Hailey created art for more than 20 years before his death in March 1994. The show runs through July 28, 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Free. FRESH FROM THE BRUSH _ And no calories. Clearwater artist Yvette Galliher exhibits large paintings of garden vegetables at Suntan Art Center, 3300 Pass-a-Grille Way, St. Pete Beach (next to the Don CeSar hotel). Hours are 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Wednesday-Saturday July 5 through July 27. Free. Obtain temporary parking permit inside gallery. 367-3818.

At the Tampa Museum of Art

Robert B. and Dorothy M. Gronlund, former Tampa residents and lenders of the Gronlund Collection of 20th Century American Prints showing at the Tampa Museum of Art through Aug. 6, will talk about their collection at the monthly First Thursday Art for Lunch program at the museum. The program begins at noon and is free with paid admission. Bring lunch; beverages and dessert are provided.

July 8, 10 a.m.: Children's art workshop on printmaking techniques, ages 7-12. Charge: $6. Registration required.

Aug. 3, noon: First Thursday, Art for Lunch! series: Dr. Stephen Gluckman, former professor of anthropology at the University of South Florida, on "Driven to Create," the Petullo exhibit of self-taught and outsider art. Bring lunch; beverage and dessert provided.

Aug. 12, 10 a.m.: Children's art workshop on self-taught and outsider art. Call for information.

Around the Bay

Dr. Michael J. Bennett, newly named curator of classical art at the Tampa Museum of Art, assumes his post Aug. 1. He replaces Dr. Pamela Russell who resigned earlier this year. . . . Tampa artist Lorraine Genovar will use the north end of Bayshore Boulevard for a project of the city of Tampa's public arts program. Installed at the site of an old tarpon hanger, the whimsical work will feature five life-sized sculptures of native fish.

Fame Game

Two paintings by St. Petersburg artist Edward A. Nyren have been selected for the recently established U.S. Embassy in Baku, Azerbaijan, formerly part of the Soviet Union.

Opportunities for Artists

The Southern Arts Federation and the American Academy in Rome announce a new collaborative project that provides three-month residencies in Rome, Italy, for Southern composers, visual artists and designers. To help area artists prepare applications for the program, a workshop will be held 9:30 a.m.-noon Sept. 8 at the Tampa Museum of Art, 600 North Ashley Drive, Tampa.
