Paul Smith fanned 11 and allowed two hits over six innings to lead Palm Harbor National past Clearwater American 3-0 in District 12 Minors All-Star baseball action this week.
Palm Harbor National is undefeated and will play Largo American on Saturday in a quarterfinal game at 12:30 p.m. Largo American edged Oldsmar, scoring the winning run in the sixth inning. Kevin Lyons fanned 11 and threw a two-hitter to get the win and Scott Schwirian got two hits to aid the offense.
In other action this week in the tournament of ages 9-10, Palm Harbor American picked up two victories. It blasted Tarpon Springs 12-2 as Tyler Clippard threw four innings and gave up two hits, and Garrett Tyler and Michael Lanz had three RBI each. Palm Harbor American then shut out Dunedin National 14-0 as Tyler allowed only one hit over five innings and fanned seven. Shawn Heuton sparked the offense with four RBI.
Palm Harbor American plays Safety Harbor American in a quarterfinal game at 3 p.m. Saturday.
Also, Safety Harbor National defeated East Lake 3-1, scoring three runs in the 10th inning to erase what had been a scoreless game for nine innings.
Zack Taylor and Jason Cole led the offense with two hits apiece while James Hinkel and Tyson McCleowney had run-scoring singles. Safety Harbor National plays West Pasco on Saturday in a quarterfinal game while Clearwater National plays Dunedin American.
Minors softball (ages 9-10): Amanda Cody tossed a no-hitter, striking out 15 batters in six innings, as Dunedin American downed Countryside 4-1 in All-Star action. Cody, a 10-year-old who Little League officials say throws 50 miles per hour, was completely dominant on the mound against the overmatched hitters.
Crystal Kipping and Cody also had two hits each to lead the offense for Dunedin American. It plays East Lake in a quarterfinal game at 1 p.m. Saturday.
East Lake defeated Oldsmar 8-1 as Tracy Legnon and Libby Gianeskis combined on a two-hitter. Katie Greeley had two hits while Kelly Grant, Amanda Dawkins, Maggie Veith, Naomi Loeffler and Jennifer Spradling contributed base hits.
Oldsmar picked up a win Wednesday night, defeating West Pasco 8-4. Melissa Pasco and Tara Pittman had two hits apiece.
Madeira wins title
GULFPORT _ B. J. Leach collected six hits and had eight RBI to lead Madeira Beach Post 273 to a 23-1 victory of Gulfport Post 125 Thursday night in an American Legion Conference game.
With the victory, Madeira clinched its fourth consecutive conference championship and qualified it for the Southwest Area tournament in late July.
Post 273 has won six of the last seven conference championships.
Leach had two doubles and four singles to lead the offense, and Dominic Fecarotta and Ryan Snellings each homered.
