Veteran Officer Bruce D. Motts was a finalist for the 1995 Florida Law Enforcement Officer of the Year award. A Largo officer for 23 years, Motts was recognized for his pioneering efforts in community policing in the city. He formed a merchants' association, helped establish "pocket parks" in the community policing area and was involved in obtaining federal loans for businesses. Motts is a member of the Metropolitan Planning Board and the Pedestrian Safety Board for Pinellas County.
Jazz band to play
LARGO _ Sonny La Rosa and America's Youngest Jazz Band, a local ensemble of young musicians, will perform a benefit concert at 7:30 p.m. today at the Largo Community Center Theater, 65 Fourth St. NW. This will be the group's last U.S. concert before it leaves for the International Jazz Festival in Montreux, Switzerland, on Thursday. The band's supporters say they have raised about $35,000 of the $40,000 needed to finance the trip. Admission to today's concert is a $6 donation. For information, call 530-3774.
Bridge to reopen for weekend
A motorist turns around on the east side of Indian Rocks Bridge on Thursday. Motorist will get reprieve for the holiday weekend. The bridge from State Road 688 will reopen at 6 p.m. today. It will close again for 10 days from 6 a.m. Wednesday to 6 a.m. July 15. While it's closed, traffic to and from the mainland is being rerouted south to the Park Boulevard bridge and north to the Belleair Causeway.
