Jimmy Kubek threw a perfect game while striking out 13 to power Cross Bayou past Gulfport 3-0 in the opening-round of the District 5 Majors (ages 11-12) baseball all-star tournament on Saturday.
Kubek helped his own cause with a single, but it was Kevin Huttinger's two-run blast that highlighted the offense for Cross Bayou. Matt Dockus contributed a single and double for Cross Bayou. Bryce Chrader, Joshua Greene, Clint Smith and Ryan Murphy all had key defensive plays to preserve the perfect game.
In other games, Tommy Zamparelli homered and Jonathan Beatty hit a grand slam as Gulf Beaches trimmed Azalea 8-7. In a losing effort, Ben Barber had three hits, including a homer.
Nick McKown picked up the win and Bobby Wilson had three hits, including a homer to propel Seminole past Pinellas Park American 20-1. Casey Kotchman had two hits.
Majors Softball (ages 11-12): Tara Owen picked up the win while throwing four innings as Northeast pounded Baypoint 18-5.
Amber Poling fired a three-hitter to pace Meadowlawn past Cross Bayou 9-4. Kristin Corset-ti and Lindsey Arthur each had three hits to lead the offense.
Senior Softball (13-15): Courtney Lewellen threw a one-hitter and had three hits, including a double as Seminole blanked Meadowlawn 9-0. Laura Griffith, Nichole Robbins and Jessica Massie each had two hits.
9/10 Baseball: Phillip Weylie and Josh Westphal combined on a no-hitter as Gulf Beaches defeated Pinellas Park American 12-1.
9/10 Softball: Nicole Goff threw seven innings to get the win and lead Cross Bayou past Gulfport 19-7. Alyssa Lembo came in to earn the save. Brittany Hyman had two RBI while Christy Baxter hit two solo homers and Shannon Wilfong added one.
