Fire puts 16 on street

Published Oct. 4, 2005

All 16 residents of a small Ybor City apartment building were left homeless Saturday morning after a smoky blaze forced their evacuation and ultimately, their eviction.

Tampa firefighters received the call to the two-story wooden structure at 2215 E Fifth Ave. at 8:56 a.m., arrived three minutes later and had the fire under control in less than an hour, a department spokesman said.

No one was injured as a result of the fire, but the building was uninhabitable due to smoke, fire and water damage. Members of the American Red Cross were called in to aid the fire victims.
