Mets, Cardinals split with shutouts

The St. Lucie Mets and visiting St. Petersburg Cardinals split a doubleheader by trading shutouts Saturday night. St. Petersburg's Jay Witasick (6-7) pitched a one-hitter and struck out nine in a 7-0 win after Jeff Cosman (3-5) threw a three-hitter in St. Lucie's 5-0 win.

Joe McEwing led the Cards in the nightcap, going 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI. The Mets' Paul Petrulis hit a three-run homer in the first game.

Phillies 4, Rangers 3: Scott Rolen's fifth home run, with two outs in the eighth inning, was the game-winner for host Clearwater.

The Phillies took a 3-0 lead in the first on Dan Held's two-run single and Scott Shores' RBI single. But Charlotte tied it in the sixth on Leland Macon's RBI single.

Nelson Metheney (4-3) pitched two innings of hitless relief for the win and Peter Agostinelli got his sixth save.

Miracle 6, Yankees 4: Torii Hunter homered and Gary Garabello went 4-for-5, including a game-winning RBI double, for host Fort Myers. Jim Champion and Tommy Knauss each drove in two runs for the Miracle, which has only one loss in the second half. Shane Spencer, who increased his RBI total to 57, gave the Yankees a 2-1 lead in the top of the third with a two-run single. Mike Mitchell went 3-for-5 for Tampa.

Blue Jays 6, Expos 2: Ryan Jones went 2-for-4, including a double, with two RBI to lift Dunedin at West Palm Beach. Tom Evans, who tripled, and Pat Moultrie each added two hits and a run for the Blue Jays. Adam Meinershagen (3-3) allowed six hits in six innings for the win.
