Meyer powers Countryside

Eddie Meyer hit a three-run homer in the seventh inning to give Countryside some breathing room as it went on to defeat Tarpon Springs 5-1 in opening-round action of the District 12 Majors (ages 11 12) baseball all-star tournament on Saturday.

With Countryside clinging to a 2-1 lead in the top of the seventh inning, Meyer hit his homer to aid the strong pitching of Nelson Fuertes.

Fuertes helped his own cause with a double and he singled twice. Fuertes went the distance, fanning 13.

Matt DiBlasi and Ryan Sutherland contributed two hits.

In other games, Chris Pachik hit a two-run homer to highlight a come-from-behind victory and also picked up the win while striking out 13 to lead Palm Harbor National past East Lake 11-4.

C. J. Schmidt also added a two-run blast, and Brian Beach had two hits and three RBI to boost the offense. Jeff Zahn had two hits to aid the offense for Palm Harbor National.

R. J. Doery had two hits and threw four innings as Oldsmar downed Dunedin American 5-3. Zack McCormick led a dramatic rally in the sixth inning and knocked in the game-winning run with a single. He also scored two runs. Gary Roebuck picked up the win while throwing the final two innings and also had a two-run double.

Mark Kanyha had two hits and picked up the win as Safety Harbor American downed Largo American 9-5. Derek Lieb and Stephen Boychuck contributed to the offense with basehits.

Jeremiah Jones tossed a one-hitter and Danny Arnold drove in the winning run as Holiday trimmed Largo National 2-1.

Juniors Baseball (age 13): Rocky Sullivan and Daniel LaVenia each had three hits apiece to pace Countryside, 21-3 over Palm Harbor National.

D. J. Kaercher allowed five hits to get the win and Trent Henderson had three hits.

Peter Thompson had two hits and earned the victory to lead Clearwater American past West Pasco 11-1. David Blakeslee, Anthony Rodriguez and Kevin McKinley had two hits.

Chad Crain knocked in five runs and collected four hits as Dunedin American routed Oldsmar 18-6. Joe Marconi had three hits and Brandon Wessner scored five runs and had two hits. Brian Close picked up the win, throwing three innings and Stan Bukowski retired the side in the seventh.

Mark Lamacchia hurled five innings and John Brennan and Ryan Shears combined for five hits to power East Lake past Safety Harbor 8-5.

Seniors Baseball (ages 13-14): Greg Olson tossed a one-hitter, fanned five in five innings and also collected four hits along with three RBI to lead Countryside to a 18-0 rout of Tarpon Springs.

Chris Maggi sparked a 12-run fourth inning with a two-run double.

In other games, Karl Roberts pitched five innings to get the victory as Oldsmar downed East Lake 12-2. Scott Pavlica was the offensive firepower as he doubled, tripled and produced six RBI to lead Oldsmar. Patrick Horvath had two doubles and Oliver Manchester, John Warwick and Mike Zehnder aided the offense with two hits apiece.

Dustin Sode struck out 10 and fired a three-hitter to lead Palm Harbor American to a 3-0 shutout over Dunedin American. David Szucs led the offense with two hits.

Wes Buckles earned a save and collected three hits while getting four RBI to lead Palm Harbor National past West Pinellas 15-13. Patrick Hudspeth and Cory Agar three hits. Kyle Locke had two hits and four RBI.

Nathan Hissa and Nick Pisano had three hits in a losing effort for West Pinellas. Ben Calhoun and David Black added two hits. Kyle Misenti struck out six and fired a two-hitter to lead Palm Harbor American past Hudson 14-1.

Misenti also helped his own cause with four hits, including two doubles. Marc Daubar homered, and Colin Clippard added four RBI for the offense. Joe Friesleban, Tim Castor and Danny Lanz all contributed two hits.

9/10 Baseball: Paul Smith, Danny Alcorn and David Eisler combined on a four-hitter as Palm Harbor National defeated Largo American 6-4. Tommy Smith, andMatt Marston each had two hits, and Cory Miller and Brett Fisher added two RBI.

In other games, Joey Angelberger had two hits, including a double as Dunedin National edged Hudson 5-4. Ryan Brill got the win and Jude Maloney pitched three innings.

Kyle Hammond, Ryan Zaborske, Nick Newstead and Daniel Gale all had hits to lead Oldsmar past Clearwater American 16-4.

Matt Malinski allowed five hits over six innings to get the win as Countryside defeated Holiday 6-3.

Alec Barlow scored three runs and David Casey had two singles.

Majors Softball (ages 11-12): Erica Drake fanned nine to pick up the win and lead East Lake past West Pinellas 10-6.

In other games, Gabby Farkasflavy had three hits and came on in relief to help Safety Harbor defeat Palm Harbor National 20-6.

Hillary Pfau and Amy Eylward each had two hits while Stephanie Carlson and Mary Francis also keyed the offense.

Also, Carla Brieske went the distance as Safety Harbor drubbed Palm Harbor American 13-1. Alanna Smith snared a line drive in the sixth inning with the bases loaded to double up the runner at first and prevent any kind of rally by Palm Harbor American. Crystal Stephens and Christa Crews sparked the offense with a couple hits each.

Barbara Southmayd came on in relief to earn the win and lead Palm Harbor National to a come-from-behind 10-7 win over Dunedin National. Lindsay Zavitz came in to earn the save. Christy Boyle sparked the offense with a bases-loaded triple. Holly Coments, Jennifer Biala and Jessica Cornett each had two hits.
