Pittsburgh hired former White Sox manager Gene Lamont as a talent evaluator. Lamont, who lives in Sarasota, was fired by Chicago on June 2. Lamont will assist with the evaluation of major and minor-league players.

Cardinals: The team placed Bernard Gilkey on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to June 28, with a strained right elbow. The leftfielder, batting .311, was replaced by Geronimo Pena, who was activated from the 15-day DL.

Expos 11, Marlins 8: David Segui and Moises Alou had three hits and three RBI each, and visiting Montreal held on after leading 10-1 in the fourth.

Segui, acquired from the Mets June 8, has a 12-game hitting streak. Jeff Fassero allowed nine hits but only one earned run in 5 innings to break his losing streak at four. Florida shortstop Kurt Abbott, from St. Petersburg, flied out to the 434-foot sign with two on and two out after the Marlins cut it to 11-8 in the eighth.

Andre Dawson, 40, honored before the game for hitting his 400th homer, strained his left thigh after a hard slide into home and is listed as day-to-day.
